Personally I have an iPod Touch, which I received as payment for a study I was in. I would not have normally bought one on my own, so this was a nice way to get one. That being said, everyone I know that has bought a 3DS since they first came out, no longer has them (other than the few that gave them to their younger siblings or family members).
I have played with several 3DS systems and I like the Dsi XL a lot better. THE 3D is ok on most of the games, but the parts that are 3D are not enough to hold your attention, and you end up turning the 3D effects off, after a short time of playing the games. The iPod Touch, while the screen is smaller than the 3DS, it looks better (to this old man), and frankly the games on the 3DS are not ones I would normally buy for myself anyway, though The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is pretty good if you have enough time to really get into it.
So get the iPod Touch and wait for the next version of the 3DS, it may be better and have a better 3D viewing angle vs the current "find the sweet spot" while game play is not always in it.
